12 space minifigures laying on their backs on a LEGO baseplate

#6703 & #6704 Space Minifig Packs

I have no packaging left for any LEGO minifigure packs and they didn’t come with booklets, making it hard to know for sure where every minifig came from. Those extra minifigures that doesn’t match up with my other sets are good candidates for being part of minfig packs, but there is also a possibility some of them belonged to my friends and ended up at my place after some joint build and play sessions.

The two space packs I’m sure I had are #6703 Minifig Pack from 1988, a birthday present from one of my sisters that year, and #6704 Minifig Pack from 1991.

Black, red, yellow and blue Futuron minifigs, and two Blacktron, each holding tool accessories.

In 1988 LEGO was halfway through the Futuron space sub-theme, with that famous monorail released the year before. The pack has one minifig in each of the four Futuron colors included.

’88 was also the last of the two-year original Blacktron sub-theme, so of course a couple of them were also in this pack. Those black-visored black helmets always ended up on some cool motorcyclist in my city, and I also remember employing the Blacktrons as fighter-jet pilots.

Two M-Tron, two Blacktron 2, one Space Police and one original Blacktron minifig, each with minifig accessories.

Technically, the #6704 pack from ’91 is the latest released LEGO I had before I entered my dark ages. But as I can’t recall exactly when I got it in relation to the other sets, it may not actually have been my last. That position is probably held by either the M-Tron Mega Core Magnetizer or Pulsar Charger that I’ve previously written about here on the Hyggebygge blog.

The M-Tron sub-theme was in its last year and two of their engineers came along with their tools, one wearing a smaller jetpack.

At the time of the release, the original Blacktron had been replaced with the much less sinister looking Blacktron 2 sub-theme. Two representatives were sent to this convention, one of them with the huge jetpack accessory. Nonetheless, this pack includes one of the original Blacktrons as well. They continued playing the role of bad-guys in the Space Police sets throughout ’89, so I guess they were still in production.

One of those Space Police minifigs is also in this pack, and it’s obvious they reused the black Futuron torso combined with new hands, legs, and helmet in white, and the signature trans-red visor. I wonder if the black Futurons were already assigned as security detail to the rest of the team, and some went on to the space police academy?
